An End-point Assessment (EPA) is an independent assessment you will complete at the end of your apprenticeship training consisting of an online knowledge test (to be passed before your assessment day), a whole day of practical assessment with Q&A, followed by a professional discussion at the end of the day.
What happens during an end-point assessment?
Each apprenticeship role has a standard assessment plan that you will be required to complete. Although this may sound scary and very formal, your coach will prepare you well before you attempt to undertake it.
It is reassuring for any apprentice to know that you will have undergone an unofficial test/review called a “gateway” to determine whether you are ready to proceed with your EPA.
This ensures that you are not put in the position of being assessed when you are not ready!
Typically, the EPA will have the following elements that will be tested:
- Practical assessments: You will be asked to complete a task where your skill and ability to complete it to the required standard is watched.
- Knowledge Tests: You may be asked to complete a written exam, multiple-choice questions, or a computer-based assessment that tests your professional knowledge of your role.
- Professional Discussions: You will undertake an interview-style assessment in which an independent assessor will ask you questions. Your answers should reflect your learning and experience on the job.
- Portfolio Reviews: During your apprenticeship, you will have created a portfolio of evidence and assignments that will be reviewed to confirm that you have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively work independently in your chosen field.
- Project Work: You will have been tasked with a specific project to showcase your problem-solving, planning and application skills. This project should reflect a real-life scenario, and ideally, it should represent the culmination of all your hard work and training.
Some apprentices may feel nervous about being tested, but solid preparation can empower the experience.
The EPA is the perfect opportunity to showcase just how much you have learned.
Remember that the whole process is designed to ensure that you are competent to work in your chosen field and to offer any potential employer reassurance that you are suitable for hiring.
Top tips to prepare for an EPA
- Plan and complete a set of mock assessments with your training provider and employer to ensure you have covered all the areas you will be assessed on. This should involve both practical and verbal discussion.
- Practise answering questions with rehearsed references to real on-the-job practical examples of why and how you would complete any given task using the skills you have previously used to achieve a successful outcome.
- Practise answering questions while performing tasks such as mucking out or tacking up.
- Take time to reflect on the knowledge, skills, and behaviour recorded in your portfolio. If you have struggled with any area in the past, ensure you have mastered it now.
- Your coach will help prepare you for your EPA right from the start of your apprenticeship, ensuring you understand the required standards and how best to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and behaviours.
- Knowing you have fully prepared for your EPA thoroughly will give you the confidence to enjoy the experience of showcasing your skills.
- Practice, practice and practice – this is the mantra to remember!
