Level 3 Award in Sporting Excellence (Racing)
Turn your passion for horses into a professional career! This apprenticeship is designed for talented, committed riders who want to develop their performance, industry knowledge and professional skills while working in a real equestrian environment.
What is this Standard?
This apprenticeship supports talented individuals to progress as elite jockeys or racing professionals. Apprentices develop advanced riding ability, physical conditioning, tactical awareness and professional behaviours while working within a licensed racing yard or training establishment.
If you are aged 16-18 and don’t have the Functional Skills equivalent qualification, you will be expected to complete L1 and/or L2. If you are aged 19+, your employer will decide if they require you to complete functional.
What Will I Learn?
Course structure:
Throughout this program, you will develop your knowledge and skills including:
– Advanced racing techniques and tactical decision-making
– Horse care, fitness and welfare at a professional level
– Physical training, nutrition and injury prevention for athletes
– Mental skills, focus, resilience and professionalism within the racing industry
– Rules, regulation and integrity within the horse racing industry
Duties:
• Effectively representing, committing and performing to the best of your ability at a local, regional, national or international level.
• Undertaking a daily training routine, supported by a multi-disciplinary team, to ensure development and retention of the technical, tactical, physical and psychological skills necessary for performing at a professional level.
• Managing and fulfilling daily, weekly and seasonal sporting and training commitments.
• Performing relevant riding and training activities under instruction leading to improved performance or evaluation of training plans.
How Long Is The Course?
Course duration:
Minimum duration of 12 months.
Study and assessment takes place at the yard/stable you are working.

Assessment is based on real workplace performance and can include practical observations, performance evidence, professional discussions and end-point assessments.
