This programme develops the practical skills and essential knowledge needed to transport horses safely, legally, and with the highest standards of welfare during long-distance journeys.
What is a Long Journey?
In line with welfare requirements, a journey for a horse is determined by the travelling either side of the intended destination – assuming the horse is returning home that day.
For example, a 3-hour journey to a competition that lasts 4 hours is deemed a Long Journey as the travel time is 6 hours and the competition time is 4 hours – exceeding 8 hours. Without a 48 hour rest period, the journey from door to door is classed as one journey.
How much does this Level 2 Horse Transportation Course Cost?
The same day course is priced at £475 to include Invigilation of the online assessment, practical observation of loading, unloading and travelling, assessment materials, certification from FirstForSport and DEFRA Certification (arranged by Sheldrake).

A short journey is for journeys under 65 kilometres.

What Will I Learn?
Duties
As part of this qualification, candidates will be expected to carry out duties such as:
• Assisting with journey planning, including route selection, rest stops, and travel timings.
• Supporting the preparation of horses for long-distance transport, including health checks and travel readiness.
• Helping to load and unload horses safely, following correct handling techniques and supervision.
• Monitoring horses’ health, behaviour, and comfort before, during, and after transportation.
• Assisting with vehicle checks, equipment preparation, and maintaining a clean, safe transport environment.
• Following legal requirements and welfare guidelines when transporting horses.
• Supporting the implementation of emergency and contingency procedures when required.
• Working as part of a team to ensure high standards of horse care, safety, and professionalism at all times.
How Long Is The Course?
Course duration:
The candidate will receive assessment materials, and then 40 hours of Guided Learning – from the employer or coach – will allow the assessor to determine the level of ability
Study and assessment takes place at the yard/stable you are working. The assessment is completed with an online multiple-choice exam and a practical,skills assessment.
Sheldrake delivers these at the yard of your choice – all insurance documents must cover the assessment location.
This course and assessment can be completed independently or in cohorts (maximum 6) to allow a full day of assessment and completion of assessment protocol.
What Are The Next Steps Once Qualified?
After completing the Level 2 Award in the Principles of Transporting Horses, the next steps may include gaining practical experience in transporting horses, progressing to further qualifications in equine care, transport, or welfare, or undertaking additional training such as vehicle operation or professional driver certification. Learners may also move towards roles involving horse transport, yard management, or specialist equine logistics within the racing, competition, or breeding industries.
