Wellbeing and Safeguarding Apprentices

Sheldrake Training are committed to addressing well-being and safeguarding needs. As a parent or guardian, you should know that your child is properly supported and made to feel safe.

We have established a thorough and constantly updated set of policies regarding how we manage all aspects of wellbeing and safeguarding. Our approaches work and we enjoy an open and supportive relationship with all our parents and guardians. They trust us and we value that highly.

All the Sheldrake staff have undergone Safeguarding and well-being training, and we can help identify support services for referral if required. We also provide check-ins with those who require support on a regular basis until they no longer need it.

Sheldrake Safeguarding Lead Approach

Our apprenticeship programmes are typically 12 – 18 months long. Throughout this time both the employer and the Sheldrake training team have a responsibility to monitor and manage the safeguarding of all young people working alongside them. Young people who are at work with mobile phones have access and exposure to the internet which can bring certain dangers directly into their daily working life. From constant demands on social channels to “fit-in” or “be-popular” they can get distracted and potentially influenced to lose focus at work and issues of all types can start to impact their working performance and demeanour.

It is important that, wherever possible, a “safeguarding lead” is identified by the employer for each workplace. The “lead” must be aware of their responsibilities of what to watch out for and act if any they spot anything of concern. With this in mind. Some training may be needed for employers to ensure they have the knowledge to properly protect apprentices working in their business.

Many small businesses may not be able to nominate a safeguarding lead, however it’s important that everyone in that business is fully aware of what to look out for and knows what to do if there’s an issue. Every employer should train their staff on whistleblowing and what to do if they have any concerns, even if issues may impact the owners or managers within the business. Protecting young people from harm is everyone’s responsibility and our Sheldrake team can advise employers if they have any concerns.

Sheldrake encourages every employer to build a culture of watchfulness.

Safeguarding Learners Living On-Site

Sheldrake offers several apprenticeship roles that require the young person to live at there place of work. This maybe a shared house, flat or other types of accommodation. If the employer offers the provision of accommodation for ‘young people’ working as apprentices, they have a duty to ensure they comply with all legislation that covers this.

For apprentices under 18 years, or under 25 years with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan, that will be sharing accommodation facilities with adults (people aged 18 years old or over), employers must ensure DBS checks (a record of a person’s criminal convictions and cautions carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service) are carried out on the other occupants within the accommodation before that child begins to live on-site.

If an employer charges for accommodation, the government provides advice and guidance on this legislation.
