Level 2 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship
This qualification covers a range of school-based roles such as Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Specialist Support Assistant and Support for Specialist Curriculum Areas.
What is this Standard?
It is aimed at new apprentices or members of the current workforce who wish to support classroom teachers to enhance pupils’ learning, in groups or individually and across all age ranges.
Apprentices will undertake on and off the job training, working with an coach in 1-2-1 and group settings. Delivery methods and a bespoke mentoring plan will be agreed from the outset and additional formal qualifications and training embedded as appropriate and to support future business needs.
If you are aged 16-18 and don’t have the Functional Skills equivalent qualification, you will be expected to complete L2. If you are aged 19+ your employer will decide if they require you to complete functional skills.
What Will I Learn?
Overview of knowledge, skills and behaviours gained as part of the apprenticeship:
- Knowledge: Understanding how pupils learn and develop, using technology, working with teachers to understand and support assessment for learning, curriculum and context, keeping children safe in education.
- Skills: Developing strategies for support, communication and teamwork, working with teachers to accurately assess learners, using school technology, problem-solving/ability to motivate pupils.
- Behaviours: Building relationships/ embracing change, adding value to education, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, professional standards and personal accountability, team working, collaboration/ engagement.

How Long Is The Course?
Course duration:
Full-time apprentices will typically spend 18 months on programme working towards the apprenticeship standard, with a minimum of 20% off-the-job training included.
Study and assessment takes place at educational centre you are working.
Teaching Assistant Assessment
End point assessment (EPA) will take place within 3 months of the apprentice reaching the EPA gateway requirements and will be in the form of a practical observation with questions and answers and a professional discussion supported by a portfolio of evidence.
