How to hire an apprentice

Firstly, Sheldrake recommends you should decide if an apprenticeship is right for your business. Taking on an apprentice may offer valuable benefits but also requires commitment of resources and management involvement. A carefully organised apprenticeship program can help businesses develop a skilled and motivated workforce, fill skill gaps, and enhance productivity. Every business owner needs to assess for themselves whether this investment activity supports their growth goals, yearly budget, and available working hours to support the development and support of an apprentice.

We recommend also taking time to explore the benefits and funding. For smaller employers, which is typically who Sheldrake mainly works with, will find that they are normally eligible for government funding that will pay between 95% and 100% of the apprentice training costs. If you are a large employer, you can use your levy to pay for your apprenticeship training.

The Apprenticeship Levy, a 0.5% tax on their annual payroll applies only to businesses who have a pay bill exceeding £3 million. This required contribution is made by the employer to HMRC. This levy is collected monthly through PAYE and funds apprenticeship training. Levy funds can be used to cover the cost of training, including for apprentices under 25.

Why should you hire an apprentice?

Apprenticeships are a proven opportunity to help support and grow your business, whatever industry you are in. Most business owners understand that they should consider succession planning and should be considering how the future could look with an increased workforce. Apprenticeships really do offer an exciting option for both apprentice and employer.

You can employ apprentices at different levels, from school leavers and university graduates to people who want to further their careers or change career direction completely.

Not only is the apprentice gaining from the experience, as an employer the recently upskilled apprentice will bring the latest thinking and technology advances right into the heart of your business. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship which helps the apprentice learn and develop new skills that directly improve your business; helping both to grow.

01.

Advertise your vacancy between September and January, the year before you need the apprentice to start. This ensures that you are selecting the best candidates who are most likely to be highly motivated and committed to completing the apprenticeship programme.

02.

By starting the process early, you will benefit from more recruitment time, and this will allow you to shortlist several candidates. You will also benefit from plenty of time to set up and prepare for supporting your new apprentice properly from day one.

I have worked with Sheldrake Training for a while now and I really enjoy their hands on and communicative way of managing apprenticeships. They provide excellent support – coaches are approachable and the admin team are superb. I highly recommend them
